I am no expert, nor do I have lived experiences of discrimination to share. As a white male educator, my life has been full of privilege and I will never know what it is like to be one of the BIPOC students I teach. What I can do, is use my place of privilege to advocate for my students of color and to advance the learning communities I am a part of with a goal of equitable learning for all. Because the truth is, our schools do not promote equitable learning.

When you’re a school faced with a crisis, gathering input is important. Opinions from your students, staff, parents, etc… can change and evolve over time and we need to be able to track them to be agile in improving our schools. The problem is, collecting survey data feels messy, particularly when we are gathering individuals’ unique perspectives. In response, we frequently adjust our surveys to make the analysis easier: restricting choices in a question or making the question somehow numeric (like a rating scale).

When this all began, we wrote about Surveying Students to gain input into their experience as a distance learner. We simply wanted to know what was working and what was not; to be agile and change. But what if we missed something? How can we dig deeper and uncover some of the sentiment or emotional value that was offered in their responses? I am convinced, that we as educators must look back at this time and uncover the emotions of our students responses.

I am one of those teachers and coaches affected by campus closures due to COVID-19. In now our fourth week, we had to take a “brick & mortar” school and turn it into a “virtual” school overnight. We changed, and as our students and teachers become better Distance Learners, it is now as important as ever to be collecting data.
One strategy I’d give every educator who may find themselves in similar circumstances, is to survey early, and survey often. Micro-surveys, and visible responses to those surveys, give people an outlet and show them you care. Plus – it helps you to respond when things aren’t going well and become a better Distance Educator.
